Relations with Russia are Moldova`s main asset - president
MOSCOW, November 3 - Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said the main results of the talks over the settlement of the Dniester conflict in the expanded 5 + 2 format last week was the parties` consent to send a group of observers to the Dniester region, to see if the upcoming parliamentary election in December will be free and democratic.
Voronin, in an interview to the newspaper Kommersant published on Thursday, also noted the significance of the fact that the talks in Moldova had taken place at all.
The president underlined that he did not wish the development of the situation under a negative scenario nor negative influence on three-centuries-history of Russian-Moldovan relations.
"We were with Russia in most serious situations," Voronin said, underlining that friendship with Russia was Moldova`s main asset.
He said he wanted relations with Russia to prosper and be exemplary both for CIS states and all the countries of the continental Europe.
Commenting on the settlement of the Dniester region conflict, Voronin noted that "our main formula for resolving the problem is to settle the conflict entirely by peaceful means. We conduct our monitoring of the situation; we know what is happening there."
Chisinau would like Russia to be a regional leader for Moldova, a guarantor of stability and predictability, he said.
